Daleks in Manhattan

(The Doctor and Martha land at the base of the Statue of Liberty.)

The Doctor: Martha, have you met my friend? (They look up and see the statue.)

Martha: Is that -- ? Oh my God! That's the Statue of Liberty!

The Doctor: Gateway to the New World. Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free...

Martha: That's so brilliant. I've always wanted to go to New York. I mean the real New York, not the New, New, New, New, New... (They walk to the edge of the island and look out towards Manhattan.)

The Doctor: Well, there's the genuine article. So good, they named it twice. Mind you, it was New Amsterdam originally. Harder to say twice. No wonder it didn't catch on. New Amsterdam, New Amsterdam.

Martha: I wonder what year it is, 'cause look, the Empire State Building's not even finished yet.

The Doctor: Work in progress. Still got a couple of floors to go, and if I know my history, that makes the date somewhere around...

Martha: (picks up a newspaper and reads the date) November 1, 1930.

The Doctor: (who wasn't looking at her) You're getting good at this.

(The Doctor and Tallulah walk down a dark tunnel. The Doctor suddenly pulls Tallulah back and shushes her when he sees the shadow of a Dalek approaching. The Dalek passes them by. The Doctor emerges and watches it go, a look of hatred on his face.)

The Doctor: (bitterly) No, no, no, no, no, no, no. They survived. They always survive while I lose everything.

Evolution of the Daleks

Dalek Sec: Prepare them for hybridisation. (The pig slaves close in on Martha, Frank and the other prisoners.)

Martha: Leave me alone! Don’t you dare! (Suddenly the song "Happy Days are Here Again" is heard. Everyone stops in confusion.)

Dalek Sec: What is that sound? (The Doctor steps into view. He has a radio in his hands.)

The Doctor: Ah. Well. Now. That would be me. (He sets the radio down.) Hello. Surprise. Boo. Et cetera.

(After Solomon has been killed by a Dalek)

Martha: (in shock) They killed him. They just shot him on the spot. (The Doctor looks up, glaring furiously at the Dalek.)

The Doctor: Daleks! (He walks forward, his arms spread.) All right, so it's my turn! Then kill me! Kill me if it'll stop you attacking these people!

Dalek: I will be the destroyer of our greatest enemy.

The Doctor: (screaming) Then do it! Do it! Just do it! (He beats on his chest.) Do it!!!!

Lazlo: (weakly) It's time, sweetheart.

Tallulah: What do you mean, time? What are you talking about?

Lazlo: None of the slaves... survive for long. Most of them only live for a few weeks. I was lucky. I held on 'cause I had you. But now... I'm dyin', Tallulah.

Tallulah: (tearfully) No, you're not. Not now, after all this. Doctor, can't you do somethin'?

The Doctor: (softly) Oh, Tallulah with three L's and an H... just you watch me. (Suddenly energized, he stands up and takes off his coat.) What do I need? Oh, I don't know. How about a great big genetic laboratory? Oh look, I've got one. (He begins darting about the lab, grabbing equipment, whipping up a solution, and talking a mile a minute as he does so.) Lazlo, just you hold on! There's been too many deaths today. Way too many people have died. Brand new creatures and wise old men and age-old enemies. And I'm telling you, I'm telling you right now, I am not having one more death! Got that? Not one! Tallulah, out of the way. (He produces a stethoscope and puts it on with a determined flourish.) The Doctor is in!

(The Doctor and Martha are back on Liberty Island. They look back at the Manhattan skyline.)

Martha: Do you reckon it's gonna work, those two?

The Doctor: I don't know. Anywhere else in the universe, I might worry about them, but New York, that’s what this city's good at. Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, and maybe the odd pig-slave-Dalek-mutant-hybrid too.

Martha: (laughs) The pig and the showgirl.

The Doctor: (with a smile) The pig and the showgirl.

Martha: Just proves it, I suppose. There's someone for everyone. (The Doctor's smile disappears.)

The Doctor: (softly) Maybe. (He turns and walks back to the TARDIS.)

There are some gems in this episode, very few mind you, but they are there. The "they always survive while I lose everything" line is magnificent. Everything else....no comment. I imagine this was more difficult to put together than the others.

True, the good bits in this story are rather few and far between. Oh, the sacrifices I make... :-)

They're starting to repeat this series on BBC Three tonight. It'll be interesting to watch it in the light of the last series.

This two parter were the first two Doctor who episodes I ever ever saw and they got me completely hooked on the show because Freema and David are both hot. Also i'm a new yorker and the only think that they usually have on the sci-fi channel that takes place in NY is usually a disaster film involving an earthquake, volcano, hurricane tornado or even a combo of many)
However I found out later that many considered them to be the worst episodes of the season. But because they were my first I can never dislike them.
The writer (Helen) did do a much better job with the Sontaran two parter in season four.

Well, they're far from my favorite two-parter, that's for sure, but I've always found at least something to enjoy in every Who episode I've seen, even the ones that get a lot of bad reviews, like Love & Monsters, and these.
